Summer time is county-fair time in America. And county fairs mean lots of food, food contests and farming competitions. The Marin County Fair, in San Rafael, Calif., puts a California spin on the summer fair. Food vendors must provide healthful options among their wares. Leave it to teens to rock the healthful options department. Terra Linda High School’s Nicarguan Service Club members entered their chopped salad into the Good Fare Showcase and won the Best in Show award. Their Gallo pinto beans dish wasn’t far behind, taking third place. All the funds teens raise at their booth benefit a school for needy students in Nicaragua. “Last year this booth raised a fifth of the money needed to keep the school open for a year. This year we should be able to do more,” Kim Lee, 17, told the Marin Independent Journal.
